Grenada is on the brink of joining the world of beach soccer, as fruitful discussions have taken place between Beach Soccer Worldwide Caribbean (BSW) and Grenadian officials regarding the potential introduction of the sport to the island.
In the past week, Sham Mohammed, the Trinidad-born President of Beach Soccer Worldwide Caribbean, engaged in talks with representatives from Grenada football and the government, including Grenada Football Association (GFA) President Marlon Glean. The discussions also explored the possibility of constructing a dedicated beach soccer facility in Grenada.
Expressing optimism about Grenada’s potential in beach soccer, Mohammed highlighted the island’s ideal conditions, including perfect weather, sunshine, sandy beaches, and skilled athletes. He emphasized that Grenada possesses all the essential elements to become a vibrant beach soccer nation.
While Grenada has not participated in an official beach soccer tournament to date, Mohammed and his organization aim to raise awareness and foster participation in the sport throughout the Caribbean. The discussions with GFA officials focused on setting up a venue, introducing a training program, and exploring the potential of hosting international beach soccer teams, contributing to sports tourism in Grenada.
Mohammed noted that GFA President Marlon Glean was receptive to the proposed ideas, and plans are underway to address the initiatives step by step in the coming weeks. These include venue setup, implementing a training program, and the possibility of hosting international beach soccer teams.
BSW Caribbean also revealed that the World Beach Soccer qualifiers for Concacaf nations are scheduled for later this year. Additionally, the Concacaf Beach Soccer Qualifiers will take place in May at a yet-to-be-announced venue. The tournament will determine the qualifiers for the 2023 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Dubai.
