The Grenada Football Association (GFA) concluded its Summer of Soccer program on Saturday, August 27, at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium, with a turnout of over 500 children from the 12 mainland centers who participated in the 6-week football initiative that began on July 11.
The closing day featured a day filled with fun activities for boys and girls of different age groups, engaging in friendly competitions and showcasing their football skills. Parents were also present in large numbers, witnessing their children enjoy football and form new friendships.
Lester Smith, the Program Director for Summer of Soccer, expressed satisfaction, stating, “The program met its objectives. We had over 1,000 children registered and coming out to play and enjoy football. We are happy to have planted the seeds which will bear fruit in the future.”
GFA President Marlon Glean expressed the association’s happiness in investing in a program that kept the nation’s children positively engaged during the summer holidays, laying the foundation for revolutionizing football in Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique.
The GFA conveyed sincere appreciation to the Government of Grenada, particularly the Ministry of Sports, and sponsors including the Grenada Bottling Company, George F Huggins, Hubbard’s, and the Ministry of Agriculture for their support in making the Summer of Soccer program and football development possible.
Summer of Soccer, a free program targeting boys and girls aged 6-16, provided the opportunity for them to learn and enjoy the game of football. The program encompassed a total of 13 centers, including one at Hillsborough Playing Field in Carriacou.
